Thatweareinthemidstofcrisisisnowwellunderstood.Ournationisatwar,againstafar-reachingnetworkofviolenceandhatred.Oureconomyisbadlyweakened,aconsequenceofgreedandirresonsibilityontheartofsome,butalsoourcollectivefailuretomakehardchoicesandrearethenationforanewage.Homeshavebeenlost;jobsshed;businessesshuttered.Ourhealthcareistoocostly;ourschoolsfailtoomany;andeachdaybringsfurtherevidencethatthewaysweuseenergystrengthenouradversariesandthreatenourlanet.

Thesearetheindicatorsofcrisis,subjecttodataandstatistics.Lessmeasurablebutnolessrofoundisasaingofconfidenceacrossourland—anaggingfearthatAmerica’sdeclineisinevitable,thatthenextgenerationmustloweritssights.

TodayIsaytoyouthatthechallengeswefacearereal.Theyareseriousandtheyaremany.Theywillnotbemeteasilyorinashortsanoftime.Butknowthis,America—theywillbemet.

Onthisday,wegatherbecausewehavechosenhoeoverfear,unityofuroseoverconflictanddiscord.Onthisday,wecometoroclaimanendtotheettygrievancesandfalseromises,therecriminationsandworn-outdogmasthatforfartoolonghavestrangledourolitics.

Weremainayoungnation,butinthewordsofScriture,thetimehascometosetasidechildishthings.Thetimehascometoreaffirmourenduringsirit;tochooseourbetterhistory;tocarryforwardthatreciousgift,thatnobleidea,assedonfromgenerationtogeneration:theGod-givenromisethatallareequal,allarefree,andalldeserveachancetoursuetheirfullmeasureofhainess.

Inreaffirmingthegreatnessofournation,weunderstandthatgreatnessisneveragiven.Itmustbeearned.Ourjourneyhasneverbeenoneofshortcutsorsettlingforless.Ithasnotbeentheathforthefaint-hearted—forthosewhoreferleisureoverwork,orseekonlytheleasuresofrichesandfame.Rather,ithasbeentherisk-takers,thedoers,themakersofthings—somecelebratedbutmoreoftenmenandwomenobscureintheirlabor,whohavecarriedusuthelong,ruggedathtowardsroserityandfreedo

Timeandagainthesemenandwomenstruggledandsacrificedandworkedtilltheirhandswererawsothatwemightliveabetterlife.TheysawAmericaasbiggerthanthesumofourindividualambitions;greaterthanallthedifferencesofbirthorwealthorfaction.

Thisisthejourneywecontinuetoday.Weremainthemostroserous,owerfulnationonEarth.Ourworkersarenolessroductivethanwhenthiscrisisbegan.Ourmindsarenolessinventive,ourgoodsandservicesnolessneededthantheywerelastweekorlastmonthorlastyear.Ourcaacityremainsundiminished.Butourtimeofstandingat,ofrotectingnarrowinterestsanduttingoffunleasantdecisions—thattimehassurelyassed.Startingtoday,wemustickourselvesu,dustourselvesoff,andbeginagaintheworkofremakingAmerica.

Foreverywherewelook,thereisworktobedone.Thestateofoureconomycallsforaction,boldandswift,andwewillact—notonlytocreatenewjobs,buttolayanewfoundationforgrowth.Wewillbuildtheroadsandbridges,theelectricgridsanddigitallinesthatfeedourcommerceandbindustogether.Wewillrestoresciencetoitsrightfullace,andwieldtechnology’swonderstoraisehealthcare’squalityandloweritscost.Wewillharnessthesunandthewindsandthesoiltofuelourcarsandrunourfactories.Andwewilltransformourschoolsandcollegesanduniversitiestomeetthedemandsofanewage.Allthiswecando.Allthiswewilldo.
